Recently, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports of citizens being contacted by scammers who claim that they missed a court appearance and have a warrant for their arrest. The callers provide a phone number to call back. Two of the numbers reported are (970) 847-6281, which appears on your caller ID as being from Hillrose, Colorado, and (970) 578-3090, which shows as being from Johnstown, Colorado. If you call either number, you will hear a recording instructing you to leave your name and number for a deputy to return your call. The fake deputies identified in these scams are using the names Deputy Brian Johnson, Deputy Stevens, and Commander Davis. The scammers will attempt to keep you on the line while you drive to their office. At some point, they will likely instruct you to make a payment over the phone.
Please be aware: THESE ARE SCAM CALLS.
If you truly missed a court appearance, law enforcement will come to your home to inform you of any warrants. They will never ask you to purchase gift cards or Bitcoin, nor will we keep you on the phone while you drive somewhere, and they will not offer to connect you with a supervisor to discuss alternative payment methods. If you receive a suspicious call, do not follow their directions or provide any personal information. Do not call them back. If you have concerns, please look up your local law enforcement office number and contact them directly instead of using the number given by the scammers
