Sterling Police Department Investigates and Recovers Stolen Vehicles;Arrest Warrant Issued for Suspect

Sterling, CO – March 6, 2025 –


The Sterling Police Department is actively investigating a series of recent motor vehicle thefts that occurred in the city between March 3 rd and today. During this time, Officers responded to reports of three stolen vehicles, including a Dodge Durango, a Ford F-150, and a Honda Civic. Through diligent investigation and swift action, all three vehicles have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners.


The Sterling Police Department has been gathering critical information to support the investigation and establish probable cause for an arrest in this case. Officers are also investigating multiple reports of vehicle trespassing, which may be related to the vehicle thefts.


As a result of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement has identified a primary suspect: Jeremiah Zachery Smith, age 36, of Sterling. An arrest warrant has been issued for Smith with the following charges:


1. 3rd Degree Motor Vehicle Theft, CRS 18-4-409(4)(a) – Felony (x1)

2. 2nd Degree Motor Vehicle Theft CRS 18-4-409(3)(a) – Felony (x2 Counts)

3. Theft CRS 18-4-401(2)(b) – Petty Offense


Jeremiah Smith remains at large. The public is advised not to approach or attempt to apprehend him. If you have any information regarding his whereabouts or if you observe him, please contact the Sterling Police

Department immediately.


The Sterling Police Department is committed to recovering stolen vehicles and property while holding offenders accountable. To prevent future motor vehicle thefts, the department urges residents to take steps

to secure their vehicles.


Safety tips include always locking vehicles, using GPS tags for tracking, installing steering wheel locks and alarms, and parking in well-lit areas. If residents suspect their vehicles have been tampered with or stolen, they are encouraged to report it to law enforcement immediately.
